Planting
General planting instructions
To reduce postage weight, ordered plants are sent without plastic container, with soil ball, in stretch film packaging. From receipt to planting, keep the plants in a cool, sun-protected place and plant them out as soon as possible in their final location or, if growing them further, place them in a container as soon as possible. All plants need nutrients to grow vigorously and healthily, so if you are not planting your conifers in their permanent location; it is a good idea to add nutrients to the planting medium when you place them in the container. We recommend controlled release potting mixes, of which special pine fertilizers are also available.
When choosing the location of the planting hole, take into account the future size of the plant; avoid planting species with wide canopies in close proximity to buildings and tall plants under power lines. The width of the planting hole should be twice the diameter of the soil ball, but at least 60 cm. For compacted, clayey soils, soil amendments may be necessary: in the planting hole, it is advisable to add mature organic manure, compost or neutral or acidic peat to the original soil to ensure good drainage.
Once the soil has been prepared, place the plant in the hole. After planting, the root collar should be at the same height as the soil surface, possibly shallowly underground. To prevent weeds and rapid drying out of the soil after planting, mulch the soil surface around the plant with aged compost, shredded wood or woodchips, or bark dust (bark chips or bark mulch).
After planting, watering during the summer in dry weather is essential until firm rooting (2-3 years). Watering is appropriate when the entire root zone is saturated, so it is better to water less frequently (once or twice a week) rather than less frequently. Over-watering should be avoided as roots can be easily damaged in de-aerated conditions. The annual increment typical of the species or variety can only be expected after rooting.
Non recyclable products such as Styrofoam or packing peanuts are not used in packaging of our plants. Shipped materials are easy to handle and recycle or dispose of.
